What is Counting?

  • Counting is finding out "how many" objects are in a group.
  • We use numbers () in a specific order to name each object.
  • The last number you say tells you the total number of things in that group.

How to Count Objects Correctly To be a master counter, follow these three simple steps:

  1. The Touch Method: Point to or touch each object as you say the number. This ensures you don't skip any!
  2. **The One-to-One Rule:**Only say one number for every one object.
  3. The "Check" Mark: If you are counting pictures on a paper, draw a small line or a dot on each one as you count so you don't count the same object twice.

Counting Groups (Up to 10) Let’s practice looking at different groups and finding the total:

  • Group A: 🍎 🍎 🍎 3 Apples
  • Group B: πŸš— πŸš— πŸš— πŸš— πŸš— 5 Cars
  • Group C: 🐸 🐸 🐸 🐸 🐸 🐸 🐸 🐸 8 Frogs

Count and Compare Once you can count, you can find out which group has more or less:

  • More: The group with the bigger number.
  • Less: The group with the smaller number.
  • Equal: When both groups have the exact same number of objects.

Why Do We Learn This?

  • Daily Life: You need counting to share snacks with friends, tell your age, or see if you have all your crayons.
  • Building Math Skills: Counting is the "start line" for Addition and Subtraction.
  • Ordering: It helps you understand what comes first, second, and third.

Lesson Summary

  • Counting tells us How Many.
  • Touch each object as you say the number.
  • The last number is the total.
