What Are Patterns?

  • A pattern is something that repeats over and over again in the same order.
  • Patterns help us predict what will come next.
  • We can find patterns in colors, shapes, sounds, numbers, and even in nature.

Types of Patterns Patterns can be made using different things:

  • Color Patterns: Red, Blue, Red, Blue...
  • Shape Patterns: Circle, Square, Circle, Square...
  • Size Patterns: Big, Small, Big, Small...

The Core of a Pattern The "Core" is the part of the pattern that repeats. To find the core, look for the moment the sequence starts over:

  • In the pattern Apple, Banana, Apple, Banana, the core is Apple, Banana.
  • Once you know the core, you can keep the pattern going forever!

Number Patterns Numbers can also follow patterns by adding or subtracting the same amount each time:

  • Growing Patterns: 2, 4, 6, 8 (Each number grows by adding 2).
  • Shrinking Patterns: 10, 9, 8, 7 (Each number shrinks by subtracting 1).

Patterns in Real Life Patterns are all around us if we look closely:

  • Animals: A zebra has a pattern of black and white stripes.
  • Clothing: A shirt might have a pattern of stripes or polka dots.
  • Music: The beat of a drum often follows a repeating pattern.
  • Day and Night: The sun rises and sets in a never-ending daily pattern.

Why Do We Learn This?

  • It helps our brains organize information.
  • It helps us understand rhythms in music and poems.
  • It is a very important part of learning high-level math and coding.

Lesson Summary

  • A pattern is a sequence that repeats in a specific order.
  • The "Core" is the set of items that repeats.
  • We can use shapes, colors, or numbers to build patterns.
