What is a Pronoun?

  • A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun.
  • We use them so we don't have to say the same name over and over again.
  • Example: Instead of saying "Sam is happy because Sam got a toy," we say "Sam is happy because he got a toy."

Common Pronouns We Use Every Day Think of pronouns as "shortcut words." Here are the ones you will use most:

1. Talking About One Person

  • I: When you are talking about yourself.
  • You: When you are talking to another person.
  • He: When you are talking about a boy or a man.
  • She: When you are talking about a girl or a woman.

2. Talking About Things or Animals

  • It: Use this for a chair, a car, a tree, or an animal.

3. Talking About Groups

  • We: When you are talking about yourself and other people together.
  • They: When you are talking about a group of other people (but not yourself).

How to Use a Pronoun To use a pronoun correctly, you first need to know who or what the "main character" is.

  • Sentence 1: The teacher is nice.
  • Sentence 2: She is nice. (We used "She" to replace "The teacher").
  • Sentence 1: The apples are red.
  • Sentence 2: They are red. (We used "They" because there is more than one apple).

Why Do We Use Pronouns?

  • It sounds better: Imagine reading a book where every sentence started with "The little bear..." It would get very boring!
  • It’s faster: Pronouns are usually short words that help us speak and write more quickly.

Lesson Summary

  • Pronouns replace nouns.
  • He, She, It, I, You, We, and They are the main pronouns.
  • They make our talking and writing smoother.
