What Are Length and Height?

  • Length tells us how long an object is from one end to the other.
  • Height tells us how tall an object is from the bottom to the top.
  • We measure these to compare objects and see which is bigger, smaller, taller, or shorter.

Measuring with Objects Before using rulers, we can measure using everyday things as units:

  • Paperclips: We can line up paperclips to see how many "clips" long a pencil is.
  • Blocks: We can stack blocks to see how many "blocks" tall a water bottle is.
  • Hand Spans: We can use our open hand to measure the width of a desk.

How to Measure Correctly To get the right answer, we must follow these rules:

  1. Start at the Edge: Always start measuring from the very beginning of the object.
  2. No Gaps: Make sure your measuring tools (like blocks) are touching each other.
  3. No Overlaps: Do not put one measuring tool on top of another.
  4. Straight Line: Always measure in a straight line from start to finish.

The Measuring Tools When we need exact numbers, we use special tools:

  • Ruler: Used for small things like books or toys (measured in centimeters or inches).
  • Measuring Tape: Used for long things like the length of a room.
  • Growth Chart: Used to see how much you have grown in height.

Comparing Sizes We use special words to describe what we find:

  • Longer and Shorter: Used for length (A bus is longer than a car).
  • Taller and Shorter: Used for height (A tree is taller than a flower).
  • Longest and Tallest: Used when comparing three or more things.

Why Do We Learn This?

  • It helps us find out if a new bed will fit in our bedroom.
  • It helps us make sure our clothes are the right size.
  • It helps builders and makers create things that stay strong and even.

Lesson Summary

  • Length is how long something is; Height is how tall it is.
  • Always start at the zero mark or the very edge of the object.
  • We can use blocks, paperclips, or rulers to find the size.
