What Are the Parts of a Plant?

• A plant is made up of different parts, just like our body.
• Each part of a plant has a special job to keep the plant alive and healthy.
• Most plants have parts that grow below the ground and parts that grow above the ground.

The Main Parts and Their Jobs

• Roots – These grow underground and hold the plant firmly in the soil. They also soak up water and nutrients.
• Stem – This is the main body of the plant that grows above the ground. It carries water and food to all other parts.
• Leaves – These grow from the stem and use sunlight to make food for the plant.
• Flowers – These are the colorful parts of the plant. They help the plant make seeds so new plants can grow.
• Fruit – This part grows from the flower and protects the seeds inside.

Why Are Plants Important?

• Food – They provide us with fruits, vegetables, grains, and nuts.
• Oxygen – Plants give out fresh air (oxygen) which humans and animals need to breathe.
• Shelter – Many birds and animals build their homes in trees and bushes.
• Protection – Plants help keep the soil together and provide shade on hot days.
