What is Place Value?

  • Place Value is the "power" a digit has based on where it sits in a number.
  • In a number, every position has a different name and a different value.
  • The same digit (like 5) can mean something small or something very big, depending on its place!

The Places: Tens and Ones In Grade 1, we look at two-digit numbers. These numbers have two main "houses":

1. The Tens Place (Left Side)

  • This digit tells you how many groups of ten are in the number.
  • It is like counting Base 10 Rods.

2. The Ones Place (Right Side)

  • This digit tells you how many single units are left over.
  • It is like counting small single cubes.

How to Find the Value Let's look at the number 35:

  • The 3 is in the Tens Place. Its value is 30(10 + 10 + 10).
  • The 5 is in the Ones Place. Its value is just 5.
  • 30 + 5 = 35

Remember: The digit on the right is always the "baby" (ones), and the digit on the left is the "giant" (tens).

Expanded Form Writing the place value of each digit as an addition sentence is called Expanded Form. It's like stretching the number out to see what’s inside!

  • 24 = 20 + 4
  • 61 = 60 + 1
  • 87 = 80 + 7

Why Do We Learn This?

  • Big Numbers: It helps you understand that 52 is much bigger than 25, even though they use the same digits.
  • Money: It helps you understand the difference between 5 dimes (tens) and 5 pennies (ones).
  • Adding: When you add numbers later, you will need to add tens to tens and ones to ones!

Lesson Summary

  • Place Value tells us how much a digit is worth.
  • The right digit is the Ones.
  • The left digit is the Tens.
  • Example: In 49, the 4 means 40 and the 9 means 9.
