What is a Number Pattern?

  • A number pattern is a list of numbers that follows a specific rule.
  • Once you figure out the rule, you can predict what the next number will be!
  • Think of it like a "Number Secret"—if you can solve the secret, you can finish the list.

Types of Patterns In Grade 1, we usually look at two main types of patterns:

1. Growing Patterns (Going Up)

  • These numbers get bigger because we are adding the same amount each time.
  • The Rule: "Add 1" or "Add 2."
  • Example: (The rule is Add 1)
  • Example: (The rule is Add 2)

2. Shrinking Patterns (Going Down)

  • These numbers get smaller because we are subtracting the same amount each time.
  • The Rule: "Subtract 1" or "Subtract 10."
  • Example: (The rule is Subtract 1)
  • Example: (The rule is Subtract 10)

How to Solve a Pattern To find the missing number, be a Pattern Detective:

  1. Look at the first two numbers: Are they getting bigger or smaller?
  2. Find the "Jump": Count how many steps are between them. (Example: Between 5 and 10 is a jump of 5).
  3. Test the Rule: Check the next two numbers. Is the jump the same?
  4. Finish the Pattern: Use that same jump to find the next number!

Fun Pattern Examples Can you see the rule for these?

  • The "Odd" Pattern: (Rule: Add 2)
  • The "Nickel" Pattern: (Rule: Add 5)
  • The "Blast Off" Pattern: (Rule: Subtract 1)

Why Do We Learn This?

  • Speed: Patterns help you count much faster than going one-by-one.
  • Logic: It trains your brain to notice how things change and repeat.
  • Art and Nature: Patterns are everywhere! You can find patterns in music, on a zebra's stripes, or in the tiles on the floor.

Lesson Summary

  • A Pattern is a sequence that follows a Rule.
  • Patterns can grow (Add) or shrink (Subtract).
  • Find the "Jump" to solve the mystery!
