What are Addition Word Problems?

  • An addition word problem is a short story that ends with a math question.
  • Instead of just seeing, you might read about 5 birds in a tree and 2 more flying over to join them.
  • Your job is to find the " math clues" in the story to find the total.

How to Solve a Word Problem Use the R.U.D.E. method to be a math superstar:

  1. Read: Read the whole story carefully.
  2. Underline: Underline the numbers you see.
  3. Draw: Draw a quick picture of the objects.
  4. Equation: Write the number sentence () and find the answer.

Look for "Key Words" When you see these words in a story, they are "secret codes" telling you to add:

  • In all
  • Total
  • Altogether
  • Plus
  • Join
  • Both

Why Do We Learn This?

  • Real Life: You use this when you count your toys, share snacks, or see how many pencils you have in your bag.
  • Reading Skills: It helps you practice reading and understanding what a story is telling you.
  • Problem Solving: It teaches you how to take a big problem and break it down into small steps.
