What Are True or False Questions?

  • A True statement means the information is correct and a fact.
  • A False statement means the information is incorrect or wrong.
  • In math, we check the numbers and signs to see if the total matches the answer given.

How to Check a Math Sentence To decide if a math sentence is True or False, follow these steps:

  1. Look at the numbers and the sign (+ or -).
  2. Solve the problem yourself using your fingers or a drawing.
  3. Compare your answer to the number after the equal (=) sign.
  4. If they match, it is True. If they do not match, it is False.

The Magic Symbols

  • True (T): Use this when the math is right.
  • False (F): Use this when the math is wrong.
  • Example: 2 + 2 = 4 is True.
  • Example: 5 - 1 = 2 is False.

Examples of True or False

The Addition Check

  • Problem: 5 + 3 = 8
  • Check: 5... 6, 7, 8. My answer is 8.
  • Result: True

The Subtraction Check

  • Problem: 10 - 4 = 5
  • Check: 10 take away 4 is 6. The problem says 5.
  • Result: False

The Zero Rule Check

  • Problem: 7 + 0 = 7
  • Check: Adding zero doesn't change the number.
  • Result: True

Why Do We Practice This?

  • It helps us catch mistakes in our own work.
  • It makes us think carefully about the signs (+ and -).
  • It builds "number sense" so we know when an answer looks right or wrong.

Lesson Summary

  • True means correct and False means incorrect.
  • Always solve the left side of the problem first to check the answer.
  • Look closely at the symbols to make sure you are adding or subtracting correctly.
