What Is Time?

  • Time helps us know when things happen throughout the day.
  • We use time to plan our breakfast, school, playtime, and sleep.
  • We measure time using clocks and calendars.

The Parts of a Clock A clock has a face with numbers from 1 to 12 and two moving "hands":

  • The Hour Hand: The short hand that moves slowly. It tells us the hour.
  • The Minute Hand: The long hand that moves faster. It tells us the minutes.
  • The Clock Face: The circular part where all the numbers are written.

Telling Time: O'Clock When the long minute hand points exactly at the 12, we say it is "o'clock":

  • If the short hand is on 3 and the long hand is on 12, it is 3 o'clock.
  • If the short hand is on 9 and the long hand is on 12, it is 9 o'clock.
  • This tells us a new hour has just started.

Day and Night Time is split into two main parts to help us know the part of the day:

  • A.M. (Morning): The time from midnight until lunchtime.
  • P.M. (Afternoon/Night): The time from lunchtime until midnight.
  • There are 24 hours in one full day.

Different Ways to See Time There are two types of clocks we use to see the time:

  • Analog Clock: A clock with a round face and moving hands.
  • Digital Clock: A clock that shows time using only numbers (like 10:30).

Units of Time Time is measured in different sizes:

  • Seconds: Very fast, like a heartbeat.
  • Minutes: There are 60 seconds in 1 minute.
  • Hours: There are 60 minutes in 1 hour.
  • Days: There are 24 hours in 1 day.

Why Do We Learn This?

  • It helps us arrive at school before the bell rings.
  • It helps us know when our favorite cartoon or movie starts.
  • It helps us understand how long we have to wait for a special event.

Lesson Summary

  • The short hand tells the hour, and the long hand tells the minutes.
  • When the long hand is on 12, it is an "o'clock" time.
  • Clocks can have hands (analog) or just numbers (digital).
