What Are Synonyms?

  • Synonyms are words that have the same or very similar meanings.
  • Think of them as "word twins." They are spelled differently and look different, but they share the same idea.
  • We use synonyms to make our speaking and writing more colorful, so we don't use the same word too many times.

Synonym Examples Here are some common whole words and their "twins":

  • Happy: Joyful, Glad, Cheerful.
  • Smart: Clever, Intelligent, Bright.
  • Fast: Quick, Rapid, Speedy.
  • Small: Tiny, Little, Minute.
  • Angry: Mad, Furious, Annoyed.

The Word Swap Watch how we can change a whole sentence just by swapping a word for its synonym:

  1. Sentence A: The dog is very big.
  2. Sentence B: The dog is very huge.
  3. Sentence C: The dog is very enormous.
  • The meaning of the sentence stays the same, but it sounds more exciting each time!

Why Do We Use Synonyms?

  • Vocabulary Growth: It helps you build a bigger "word toolbox."
  • Better Writing: Using different words makes your stories more interesting for the reader.
  • Clearer Meaning: Sometimes one synonym is a "better fit" than another (Example: Using "Freezing" is better than just "Cold" on a snowy day).

Lesson Summary

  • Synonyms are different words with the same meaning.
  • They help us avoid repeating the same word.
