What Are Action Words?

  • Action words are called Verbs. They are words that tell us what someone or something is doing.
  • If a noun (person, animal, or thing) moves or performs a task, the word we use to describe that movement is an action word.
  • Every complete sentence needs an action word to tell the story of "what happened."

Spotting the Action To find the action word, ask yourself: "What is the subject doing?"

  • The Sentence: The dog barks at the mailman.
  • The Question: What is the dog doing?
  • The Action Word: Barks.

Action Words in Sentences See how the whole word describes the energy in these examples:

  • The Chef: Dad cooks dinner for us.

Why Do We Learn This?

  • Storytelling: Action words make your stories exciting. Instead of just saying "The man went," you can say "The man sprinted."
  • Grammar: Verbs change their shape depending on when the action happened (Past, Present, or Future).
  • Communication: They help you give clear instructions, like "Sit down" or "Open the door."
