What Are Position Words?

  • Position words are called Prepositions. They tell us where a person, animal, or thing is located.
  • These words show the relationship between a noun and the rest of the sentence.
  • Without position words, we wouldn't know if your keys are on the table or under the table!

Common Position Words Here are the most common words we use to describe location:

  • In: Inside something (The cat is in the box).
  • On: Touching the top of something (The book is on the desk).
  • Under: Below something (The shoes are under the bed).
  • Behind: At the back of something (The sun hid behind the clouds).
  • In front of: At the forward part of something (The car is in front of the house).
  • Between: In the middle of two things (The apple is between the two oranges).
  • Next to / Beside: Right by the side of something (Stand next to your friend).

Position Words in Action See how changing the whole word changes the location:

  • The pencil is beside the cup. (It is next to it).
  • The pencil is under the cup. (The cup is on top of it).
