What Are Vowels?

  • Out of the 26 letters in the alphabet, 5 are very special and are called Vowels.
  • The vowels are: A, E, I, O, U.
  • These letters are like "glue" because they join other letters together to make words.

The Hand Trick Vowels are easy to remember using your own hand:

  • Look at your 5 fingers.
  • Give each finger a name: A, E, I, O, U.
  • Every word you speak or write needs at least one of these five friends.

How to Find a Vowel To find a vowel in a word, follow these simple steps:

  1. Look at the word carefully (Example: D O G).
  2. Check if any letter matches your 5 fingers (A, E, I, O, U).
  3. The matching letter is your vowel (In DOG, the vowel is O).

  • C U P: The vowel is U.

  • It helps us sound out new words when we are reading.
  • It helps us spell words correctly by listening for the middle sound.
  • Without vowels, words would just be a bunch of noise that we couldn't say.
