What Are Numbers in Words?

  • Numbers in words are simply the names of numbers written out using letters instead of symbols (digits).
  • Just like you have a name (like "Ali" or "Sara"), the number 1 has a name, which is "One."
  • Writing numbers in words helps us read and write clearly in stories, on checks, and in math problems.

The Number Chart (1 to 10) Here is how we translate the digits you know into their word names:

Digit Number Word
1 One
2 Two
3 Three
4 Four
5 Five
6 Six
7 Seven
8 Eight
9 Nine
10 Ten

The Tricky "Teen" Words (11 to 20) After 10, the names change a little. Most of them end in "-teen," but some have special names:

  • 11: Eleven
  • 12: Twelve
  • 13: Thirteen
  • 14: Fourteen
  • 15: Fifteen (Notice it's not "fiveteen"!)
  • 16: Sixteen
  • 17: Seventeen
  • 18: Eighteen
  • 19: Nineteen
  • 20: Twenty

How to Write Bigger Numbers When you reach numbers like 21, you just combine the "tens" name with the "ones" name:

  • 20 + 1 = Twenty-one
  • 20 + 5 = Twenty-five
  • 30 + 2 = Thirty-two

Why Do We Learn This?

  • Reading: When you read books, numbers are often written as words.
  • Money: When people write checks or fill out forms, they have to write the number in words so there are no mistakes.
  • Spelling: It helps you practice your phonics and letter sounds!

Lesson Summary

  • Every number digit has a word name.
  • Numbers 1-12 have unique names.
  • Numbers 13-19 usually end in "-teen."
  • Use a hyphen (a little dash) for numbers like twenty-two.
