What Are Even and Odd Numbers?

  • Every number tells us how many things are in a group.
  • We can find out if a number is Even or Odd by trying to give every item a partner.
  • Thinking about "best friends" or "pairs" helps us understand these numbers easily.

Even Numbers: Everyone Has a Partner

  • An Even number is a number that can be split into pairs (groups of two).
  • In an even group, every single item has a partner or a "best friend."
  • No one is left out or standing alone.
  • Even numbers always end in: 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8.

Odd Numbers: Someone Is Left Out

  • An Odd number is a number that cannot be split perfectly into pairs.
  • In an odd group, after we make all the pairs, there is always one left over.
  • One item is "odd man out" because it doesn't have a partner.
  • Odd numbers always end in: 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9.

The Buddy Test

  • To check a number, imagine the items are children lining up for a walk.
  • If every child has a buddy to hold hands with, the number is Even.
  • If one child has no buddy to hold hands with, the number is Odd.

Examples in Daily Life

  • Even: Your shoes (2), the wheels on a car (4), or the legs on a spider (8).
  • Odd: The nose on your face (1), the points on a star (5), or the colors on a traffic light (3).

Lesson Summary

  • Even numbers make perfect pairs with no leftovers.
  • Odd numbers always have one item left over without a partner.
  • Looking at the last digit of a big number helps us tell if it is Even or Odd instantly.
