What is Light?

Light is a form of energy that travels in waves. It is the fastest thing in the universe, traveling at about 300,000 kilometers per second! Light allows us to see the world around us because it bounces off objects and enters our eyes.

1. Light Travels in Straight Lines

Light always travels in a straight path called a ray. It will keep going straight until it hits something.

  • Shadows: When an object gets in the way of light rays, it blocks them. Since the light cannot curve around the object, it creates a dark area behind it called a shadow.

2. Reflection (Bouncing)

Reflection happens when light hits a surface and bounces off, like a ball bouncing off a wall.

  • Smooth Surfaces: Mirrors or calm water reflect light very clearly, allowing us to see an image.
  • Rough Surfaces: Objects like a brick or a piece of paper reflect light in many different directions, which is why we can see the object but not our own reflection in it.

3. Refraction (Bending)

Refraction is the bending of light as it passes from one material to another (like from air into water). Light changes speed when it enters a different material, which causes it to tilt.

  • The "Broken Straw" Trick: If you put a straw in a glass of water, it looks like it is broken or shifted at the water line because of refraction.
  • Lenses: Eyeglasses and magnifying glasses use refraction to bend light so we can see things more clearly.

4. Absorption (Soaking Up)

When light hits an object, the object might "soak up" the energy instead of reflecting it. This is called absorption.

  • Heat: When light is absorbed, it usually turns into heat. This is why a black T-shirt feels much hotter in the sun than a white one—black absorbs almost all light, while white reflects it!

5. Dispersion (The Rainbow)

White light (like sunlight) is actually made up of all the colors of the rainbow: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet (ROYGBIV). When light passes through a prism or a raindrop, it bends and separates into these colors.

Lesson Summary

  • Light travels in straight lines and creates shadows.
  • Reflection is light bouncing; Refraction is light bending.
  • Objects can be transparent, translucent, or opaque.
  • White light is a mix of seven colors.
