Fuel for People and Machines

Everything that moves or grows needs energy. Just like a car needs gasoline to drive, your body and the machines we use every day need "fuel" to work.

1. Fuel for People (Food)

Our bodies get energy from the food we eat. This energy is measured in Calories. When you eat, your digestive system breaks down food into nutrients that your blood carries to your muscles and brain.

  • Carbohydrates: The "fast fuel" found in bread, pasta, and fruit. It gives you immediate energy to run and play.
  • Fats: The "stored fuel" found in nuts, oils, and avocados. Your body saves this for later.
  • Proteins: The "building fuel" found in meat, beans, and eggs. It repairs your body and helps you grow.

2. Fuel for Machines

Machines don't eat food, but they need different types of energy sources to move or create heat and light.

Common Types of Machine Fuel:

  • Gasoline/Diesel: A liquid fuel made from oil used for cars, trucks, and airplanes.
  • Electricity: Used to power toasters, computers, and electric cars. It can be made from the sun, wind, or burning coal.
  • Natural Gas: Used in many homes for heating and cooking on stoves.
  • Wood/Coal: Solid fuels burned to create heat or steam power.

3. Renewable vs. Non-Renewable Fuel We have to think about where our machine fuel comes from:

  • Non-Renewable: Fuels like oil and coal take millions of years to form. Once we use them, they are gone.
  • Renewable: Fuels like sunlight (solar), wind, and water never run out and are much cleaner for the Earth.

Lesson Summary

  • Food is the fuel that gives people energy to live and grow.
  • Gas, electricity, and coal are fuels that give machines energy to work.
  • Both systems create energy and waste (like Carbon Dioxide).
