What is Skip Counting?

  • Skip Counting is a way of counting where you jump over some numbers to get to the total faster.
  • Instead of counting by 1s (), you count in equal groups.
  • This is a "math superpower" that helps you with addition and tells you how to count money!

1. Counting by 2s When we count by 2s, we only say the Even numbers. We skip one number every time we jump.

  • The Pattern: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20...

2. Counting by 5s Counting by 5s is like a "High Five" for your brain! Every number in this pattern ends in either a 5 or a 0.

  • The Pattern: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50...

3. Counting by 10s This is the fastest way to reach 100! Every number in this pattern ends in a 0. It is just like counting by 1s, but you add a zero to the end of each number.

  • The Pattern: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100...

How to Practice Skip Counting

  • The Rhythm Method: Say the numbers with a beat! "Five, ten, fifteen, twenty!"
  • The Hundreds Chart: Look at a chart of 100 numbers and color in the jumps. You will see straight lines or patterns.
  • Movement: Take a "big jump" every time you say a number while skip counting across the room.

Why Do We Learn This?

  • Speed: It is much faster than counting one-by-one.
  • Multiplication: Skip counting is the "secret ingredient" to learning times tables later on.
