What is Addition with a Number Line?

  • A number line is a straight line with numbers placed in order.
  • Adding on a number line is like taking a walk! You start at one number and "jump" forward to find the total.
  • It helps you "see" how numbers grow larger as you add.

How to Add on a Number Line Follow these three easy steps to solve any addition problem (like 5 + 3):

  1. Find the Starting Point: Look at the first number in your equation. Place your finger (or a pencil) on that number on the line. (Start at 5).
  2. Make the Jumps: Look at the second number. This tells you how many "hops" to take. Always hop to the right because the numbers are getting bigger. (Take 3 hops).
  3. Find the Landing Spot: The number you land on after your last hop is your answer! (You landed on 8).

The "Big Number" Strategy To make adding even faster, always start with the larger number, even if it comes second in the equation!

  • For 2 + 9, it is easier to start at 9 and take 2 small hops than it is to start at 2 and take 9 big hops.
  • You will get the same answer (11), but it’s much quicker!

Why Do We Use Number Lines?

  • Visualizing Distance: It shows you exactly how much "space" is between numbers.
  • No More Fingers: It gives you a tool to use when you run out of fingers to count on.
  • Preparation: Learning the number line now will help you later with harder math like subtraction and measurement.

Lesson Summary

  • Start at the first number.
  • Jump to the right for addition.
  • Land on the sum (the answer).
