What is Addition?

  • Addition is taking two or more groups and putting them together to see how many you have in total.
  • We use the plus sign (+) to show we are adding.
  • The answer to an addition problem is called the Sum.

The Parts of an Addition Sentence Every addition problem looks like a little story: 2 + 3 = 5

  • 2 and 3 are the groups we start with.
  • + tells us to join them together.
  • = means "is the same as."
  • 5 is the Sum (the total).

Ways to Solve Addition If you get stuck, try one of these "Counting Tools":

1. Use Your Fingers Hold up 2 fingers on one hand and 3 fingers on the other. Count them all together: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5!

3. Use a Number Line

  • Start at the first number (like 4).
  • "Hop" forward the number of times the second number says (hop 2 times).
  • Where did you land? On the 6!

The "Counting On" Trick This is a fast way to add in your head:

  1. Put the big number in your brain (Example: , put 7 in your brain).
  2. Count up using the smaller number: "7... 8, 9."
