What is a Verb?

  • A verb is an action word. It tells you what someone or something is doing.
  • If you can do it with your body or your mind, it is a verb!
  • Every sentence needs a verb to show what is happening.

Types of Verbs

1. Action Verbs (Physical) These are things you can see people doing.

  • Examples: Run, jump, eat, sleep, swim, dance.

2. Thought Verbs (Mental) These are things you do with your brain. You can't always see them, but they are still actions!

  • Examples: Think, know, want, dream, learn, wonder.

3. Helping Verbs Sometimes verbs need a little help to show when something is happening.

  • Examples: Is, are, was, were, can, will.
  • Sentence: "She is eating."

The "Action" Test If you aren't sure if a word is a verb, try to put a pronoun like "I" or "He" in front of it and see if it sounds like an action.

  • Can you "apple"? No, an apple is a thing (noun).
  • Can you "run"? Yes! (verb).
  • Can you "yellow"? No, yellow describes something (adjective).

Verbs and Tense (Past, Present, and Future) Verbs can change their shape to tell us when the action happened.

  • Past (Already happened): We usually add -ed.

  • Example: "I walked to school."

  • Present (Happening now): We often add -ing.

  • Example: "I am walking to school."

  • Future (Going to happen): We use the word will.

  • Example: "I will walk to school."

Why Do We Learn This?

  • Storytelling: Verbs bring your stories to life! Instead of just saying "The dog was there," you can say "The dog zoomed through the yard."
  • Directions: When you follow instructions (like "Fold the paper"), the most important word is the verb!

Lesson Summary

  • Verbs are doing words.
  • They can be physical (run) or mental (think).
