Understanding Hot and Cold

Temperature is the measurement of how hot or cold something is. We feel temperature every day through our skin, whether we are touching a warm mug of cocoa or feeling a chilly breeze.

1. What Makes Things Hot?

Heat is a form of energy. When molecules (the tiny "building blocks" that make up everything) move very fast, the object gets hotter.

  • The Sun: Our biggest source of natural heat. It warms the land, water, and air.
  • Fire: Burning wood or gas creates heat for cooking and warmth.
  • Electricity: Things like toasters, ovens, and hair dryers use electricity to create heat.
  • Friction: If you rub your hands together very fast, they get warm! That is heat caused by rubbing.

2. What Makes Things Cold?

"Cold" is actually just the absence of heat. When energy is taken away and molecules slow down, things feel cold.

  • Ice and Snow: Water freezes when it loses enough heat.
  • Wind: Moving air can carry heat away from your skin, making you feel chilly.
  • Refrigerators: These machines work by pumping the heat out of the fridge to keep your food cold.

3. How Do We Measure It?

We use a tool called a thermometer to see exactly how hot or cold it is.

  • The Scale: Temperature is usually measured in Celsius (°C) or Fahrenheit (°F).
  • Boiling Point: Water gets so hot it turns to steam at 100°C.
  • Freezing Point: Water turns to ice at 0°C.

4. Staying Safe with Temperature

Our bodies work best at a steady temperature (about 37°C or 98.6°F). We use different things to help us stay comfortable:

If it is HOT outside... If it is COLD outside...
We wear light clothes (shorts/T-shirts). We wear heavy clothes (coats/scarves).
We drink cold water to stay hydrated. We drink warm soup or cocoa.
We use fans or air conditioning. We use heaters or blankets.
We seek shade under trees. We stay in the sunlight.

Lesson Summary

  • Temperature tells us how much heat energy something has.
  • Heat comes from the Sun, fire, electricity, and friction.
  • Thermometers are the tools we use to measure temperature accurately.
  • We change our clothing and food to help our bodies stay at the right temperature.
