What is Backward Skip Counting?

  • Backward skip counting is counting down from a larger number to a smaller number by "jumping" over numbers.
  • It is just like skip counting forward, but you go down the number line instead of up.
  • This is a great way to practice subtraction and understanding number patterns.

1. Counting Backward by 2s When we count backward by 2s, we subtract 2 from each number. We land on only Even numbers if we start from an even number.

  • The Pattern: 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 0.

2. Counting Backward by 5s Counting backward by 5s is like a countdown. Every number will still end in a 5 or a 0.

  • The Pattern: 50, 45, 40, 35, 30, 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 0.

3. Counting Backward by 10s This is the fastest way to get back to zero from a big number! Only the "tens" digit changes; the "ones" digit stays 0.

  • The Pattern: 100, 90, 80, 70, 60, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10, 0.
