What are Correct Spellings?

  • Spelling is the act of putting letters in the correct order to form a word.
  • Correct spelling is like a secret code: if you use the wrong letters, the message might be hard for others to read!
  • In Grade 1, we learn to spell by listening to the sounds (phonics) and memorizing sight words.

Important Spelling Rules English can be tricky, but these rules help most of the time:

1. The "Magic E" Rule When an 'e' is at the end of a word, it stays silent but tells the first vowel to say its own name (it makes it a "Long Vowel").

  • Example: Can becomes Cake. Hop becomes Hope.

2. Vowel Teams Sometimes two vowels go walking together, and the first one does the talking!

  • Example: Boat (you hear the 'O'). Rain (you hear the 'A').

3. Digraphs (The H-Brothers) Sometimes two letters join together to make a brand-new sound.

  • SH (The quiet sound: Ship)
  • CH (The train sound: Chip)
  • TH (The tongue sound: The)

Sight Words (Red Words) Some words are "rule-breakers." You can't sound them out easily, so you have to learn them by heart.

  • Examples: the, said, was, of, are.

Top Tips for Better Spelling

  • Read Every Day: The more you see a word in a book, the easier it is for your brain to remember it.
  • Sky-Write it: Use your finger to "write" words in the air while you say the letters out loud.
  • Use a Word Wall: Keep a list of words you use a lot near your desk.

Why Do We Learn This?

  • Being Understood: It helps your friends, family, and teachers understand exactly what you want to say.
  • Confidence: When you know how to spell, you can write stories faster and more easily!
  • Reading Power: Spelling and reading are "best friends"—improving one always helps the other.

Lesson Summary

  • Sound out words by listening to the beginning, middle, and end.
  • Watch out for Magic E and H-Brothers.
  • Practice Sight Words because they don't always follow the rules!
